DAY 66 - Shanghai, China
March 3, 2024
Our ship entered the river about midnight to head up into the city of Shanghai to arrive by 7 am in the downtown area. We docked right there and were so close to everything! We were waitlisted on the day excursion, but decided to go out on our own. The ship's shuttle bus took us to the tourist information center, which was right next to a very nice park and - of course - a huge and beautiful outdoor shopping center.
On our way back, we passed a big statue of the chairman....reminding us all that even though we are in a trading area with lots of western influence, we are STILL in China. But it is a beautiful walk along the river!
After they were defeated in the opium wars, China conceded a large part of the port of Shanghai to the British. They call that area the British Concession. There is also a French Concession. There is still a big architectural influence from their days of trade and banking.
Back on the ship for a quick snack before heading out for an evening in Shanghai.
Our first stop was the observation deck on the 88th floor of one of the many skyscrapers.
I don't think that I have ever bought a pack of cigarettes in my life, but these looked so cool....and it would have been a great souvenir....but they were only sold by the case. So I took a picture!
This is the view down the middle/inside of the building!
So there is a great story that goes with the above picture. For an additional charge, you can walk out on this ledge - 88 stories up - and walk around the entire building. Leslie asked if she could go out and do that. John's response was...You're CRAZY! She said she really wanted to do this...she wasn't scared at all! John responded saying you have had 2-3 drinks tonight and there is no way I am going to let you do this! And it went back and forth...why not?...no way!!
Come to find out that Leslie thought that the walk was made outside of the building, but INSIDE the railing. Once realizing that there was no room to walk inside the railing, and that the walk was actually along this 4 foot ledge with no outside barrier, the discussion quickly ended!
Our second stop was in the old time "French concession" area....with another taste from home!
Shake Shack Shanghai Style!!
